Eighteen months ago I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity.
Before the battery, my panels exported most of their midday power for a modest credit, then I cooked dinner and ran the heat-pump water heater after sunset using grid power. Total monthly costs were frustratingly high.
The installation itself was surprisingly straightforward. The installer mounted the hybrid inverter beside my existing switchboard, connected the battery in a utility-room corner, and programmed a 20 percent reserve so I would not completely drain it overnight.
I chose a unit built around tewaycell 280ah cells because the specifications showed a sensible cycle life and the price made the payback feel realistic, not magical.
The biggest change is between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by midafternoon. It then carries our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and induction cooktop through dinner. My average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $92, although winter is much less impressive because short days leave little excess solar energy.
I do not claim complete energy independence. We still import power during cloudy stretches, and the battery cannot cover every high-load appliance at once. However, shifting those peak-hour loads has made the savings predictable. I check the monitoring app most mornings; seeing a clean overnight discharge is more useful to me than a flashy percentage on a sales brochure.
There was one minor scare in the first month. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped discharging at the scheduled time. I power-cycled it, checked the time-zone setting, and contacted the installer. The schedule had reset to default; correcting it took five minutes, and it has behaved normally since. That small lesson convinced me to keep paper settings and not rely only on the app anymore.
