Every evening, I used to watch my electricity meter with dread as our utility’s peak rate kicked in. Since installing a deye sun inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery, that habit has mostly disappeared. I charge the battery from our rooftop solar during the day, then run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater from stored energy between 4 and 9 p.m.
The difference is easiest to see on cloudy spring days. Before adding storage, our solar panels still helped, but we imported expensive power after sunset. Last month, the battery supplied roughly 6 to 8 kWh during peak hours on most days. My bill was about $38 lower than the same month last year, despite using a little more electricity at home. That is not a dramatic sales-brochure number, but it feels meaningful because the saving repeats every month.
I also appreciate the battery’s quiet, boring behavior. The deye sun system switches from solar charging to home loads automatically, and I rarely think about it. I set a 20 percent reserve for outages, so there is always a cushion overnight. During a neighborhood outage, the transfer was quick enough that our router stayed online and the lights barely flickered. I did notice the battery would not discharge one evening because its temperature reading was outside the configured range. The app showed the warning clearly; moving a box that had been blocking airflow and restarting the inverter solved it.
My main practical lesson is to check your rate schedule before choosing battery size. I do not need a huge solar battery to cover the whole night; I needed enough capacity to avoid the expensive window. Monitoring daily charge cycles and peak-hour consumption has made the system feel less like expensive equipment and more like a dependable household appliance.
