Every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter like it was a scoreboard. Between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., our household used the most power: cooking dinner, running the heat pump, washing clothes, and charging two phones and a laptop. Since installing a 10 kWh lithium battery with a deye hybrid solar inverter, those expensive hours feel much less painful. The battery charges from our rooftop solar during the day, then takes over when the sun drops. I can see the change directly on my utility bill: our winter evening consumption has fallen from roughly 12 kWh a day to 3 or 4 kWh, depending on the weather.

The only hiccup came during the first week. One morning, I noticed the battery had not discharged overnight, even though the state of charge showed 68 percent. The inverter app reported “grid standby,” which sounded more dramatic than it was. I checked the operating mode and discovered that I had accidentally enabled a backup-only setting while exploring the menus. Switching it back to self-consumption fixed everything. Since then, I have left the controls alone apart from adjusting the reserve level. I keep 25 percent in reserve for outages, so the system normally uses the upper 75 percent for daily bill savings.

What I appreciate most is how boring the system has become. I do not think about battery chemistry or inverter settings while making dinner; I notice that the evening peak on my energy statement is smaller. In sunny months, the battery reaches full charge by early afternoon, and we export only the surplus. On cloudy days, savings are smaller, but the battery still shifts some solar generation into the evening. After several months, the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and sensible load timing has made our monthly costs steadier.
