Eighteen months ago, I added a 12V LiFePO4 battery to my small rooftop solar setup, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My system is modest: four 400-watt panels, a 3kW inverter, and one renogy lithium iron phosphate battery 12 volt mounted in the garage. I was not trying to live off-grid; I simply wanted the solar power I generated at lunchtime to keep working after dinner.
The difference showed up immediately in my routine. On sunny days, the charge controller fills the battery by mid-afternoon, and the inverter switches our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television over to battery power around 4 p.m. I usually set the battery cutoff at 20 percent, so there is a reserve instead of squeezing out every last amp-hour. Before installing energy storage, our evening-heavy usage pushed the utility bill to roughly $165 a month in summer. Now it is generally between $95 and $115. The exact savings depend on cloudy weather and air-conditioning, but avoiding those expensive peak-hour kWh has been the biggest win.
I did have one troubleshooting scare. One morning the battery monitor showed almost no charging, even though the panels were producing normally. I found that a slightly loose terminal connection had developed after a temperature change. After shutting everything down, tightening the cable, and checking the fuse, charging returned. Since then, I inspect the connections every few months and keep the battery clean and dry.
The battery has also made outages less stressful. During a two-hour grid interruption, it quietly kept the fridge and internet running without any generator noise. I still watch the state of charge on rainy weeks, but the solar battery has been refreshingly practical: less peak-rate electricity, quieter backup power, and no maintenance beyond checking the app and occasionally glancing at the wiring.
