I installed a victron multiplus ii inverter last spring, pairing it with 10.2kWh lithium battery storage and 4.8kW of rooftop solar. It has become the part of our home energy setup I notice most.
The biggest difference is what happens after sunset. Before adding battery storage, our electric heat pump and cooking pushed us into expensive evening rates. Now the battery charges from midday solar and runs the house through the peak period. That change has cut our monthly bills by roughly 35%, from about $180 in winter to $115.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% by early afternoon. I have set a reserve level of 20%, so it keeps emergency power available without me thinking about it. When clouds roll in, the system simply uses grid power after the reserve is protected. Not glamorous, but that predictability matters more than squeezing out every last watt.
My favorite practical improvement is that I no longer have to change routines around weather. I run the dishwasher and washing machine during daylight, but I can still cook dinner normally even when solar production is zero. Last month, I noticed the battery stopped discharging one evening. The monitoring app showed a communication warning, and my first thought was a failed battery. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the network cable, and waited. After ten minutes, the warning cleared. It turned out our router had rebooted after a firmware update.
Since then, I have added a small UPS for the router, because reliable monitoring helps when troubleshooting solar battery systems. I check the state of charge before using high-power appliances, but I am not constantly watching it. We still use grid power during rainy stretches; the battery has not made us independent, but it has made our electricity costs calmer and more predictable.
