Early last summer, I installed a deye hybrid 8kw inverter with a 10kWh lithium battery in my garage. The goal was simple: store excess solar during the day and use it after dinner, when our electricity rate jumps. The setup took most of a Saturday. I already had rooftop panels, so the installer mainly mounted the battery, connected the hybrid inverter, and programmed a 20% backup reserve. Watching the app fill with solar production was oddly satisfying, although the Wi-Fi connection dropped twice during commissioning. A router reboot fixed it, and I have not seen the problem since.
My biggest practical win is peak-hour savings. Before storage, my heat pump, washing machine, and cooking often overlapped between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. Now the battery starts discharging around five, keeping the grid meter almost still while we make dinner. On sunny days, it carries the house until about 10:30 p.m., and then the grid takes over quietly. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $210 to $125 in the first full month, despite similar weather and usage. That is about $85 saved, which feels more meaningful than watching daily production graphs.
I did have one small scare. During a storm, the battery stopped discharging and the app showed “standby.” The inverter still had power, so I checked the breakers and found that the backup output breaker had tripped. Resetting it restored discharge immediately. I now keep a flashlight and the inverter manual nearby, rather than relying entirely on an app notification.
Overall, the solar battery has made our existing panels noticeably more useful. It does not eliminate the grid bill, and cloudy stretches still require careful energy use, but the deye hybrid 8kw system has turned evening solar into something we actually use. That's the kind of upgrade I notice every night.
