Running my solar battery system for six months has changed how I think about electricity bills. Before installing it, I was sending much of my rooftop solar power back to the grid during the afternoon, then buying expensive electricity after dinner. The difference was especially noticeable in summer, when the air conditioner ran for hours. My installer paired a 10kWh lithium battery with a growatt 5kw hybrid inverter, and the setup has been refreshingly ordinary.
During sunny days, panels charge the battery by early afternoon. I set the system to reserve 20% capacity for outages, but it normally discharges between 4:30 and 10:30 p.m. That covers cooking, the dishwasher, the television, and most of our evening lighting. I used to watch the inverter app obsessively, but now I mostly glance at it over breakfast. On a clear day, the battery reaches full before the expensive time-of-use period.
The biggest change appears on the utility statement. Before storage, my average monthly bill was around $180 during the hottest months. Since installing the battery, it has settled near $95, although our usage is roughly the same. On cloudy weeks, savings are smaller, perhaps $45 to $60, because I still need grid power overnight. Still, the battery makes solar self-consumption feel worthwhile. My utility credits used to expire or sit unused, whereas stored energy now pays for itself during peak rates.
I had one minor scare in January. A cold morning, the app showed “standby” and the battery was not charging. I checked the breaker, then discovered the inverter had lost its Wi-Fi connection after a router update. The solar battery was still working, but I could not see its status remotely. Rebooting the router and reconnecting the monitoring dongle fixed it in about ten minutes. That reassured me again.
