I installed a 5kWh home battery last spring after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump whenever the sun went down. My main goal was simple: use more of my rooftop solar after sunset, especially during expensive peak hours.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar during the afternoon. I chose a lifepo4 battery with bluetooth because I wanted to check its state of charge without walking outside to the inverter.
The app is basic but useful. Each morning I can see how much energy the solar panels produced, what the battery stored, and whether the house used grid power overnight. That visibility has made me change a few habits. I run the dishwasher and washing machine before dinner, leaving the battery for lights, the refrigerator, and heating after dark.
The biggest difference shows up on peak-rate evenings. Before storage, I routinely imported electricity between 5 and 9 p.m. Now the battery usually covers that window, unless we have several cloudy days in a row. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. I did not expect the savings to feel so noticeable, but keeping solar energy out of the utility’s peak period has made the battery payback feel more realistic.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a firmware update, Bluetooth showed the battery at 0% even though the inverter was still powering the house. I panicked briefly, then checked the physical display and found the charge reading was normal; it was only the app losing connection. Restarting Bluetooth fixed it in about two minutes. Since then, I check the inverter first before assuming something is wrong.
