development boards

Early last summer, I installed a 10-kWh solar battery beside my garage after watching our electricity bills climb every evening. I already had rooftop solar, but before adding energy storage, the panels mostly helped during the day while we cooked, did laundry, and used air conditioning after sunset. The battery changed that pattern more than I expected.

The hybrid inverter connected to my existing solar system, and the monitoring app showed charge levels within a few hours. So far, it works.

The practical difference appears on our bill. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, with the highest rates from 4 to 9 p.m. Before the battery, those hours routinely added about $3 to $5 per day in summer. Now I usually run the dishwasher, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and evening lights from stored power. On clear weeks, that cuts roughly $25 to $35 from our monthly bill. It is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but seeing the battery discharge instead of buying grid electricity at the highest rate feels genuinely worthwhile.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app reported the battery was offline, although the inverter itself was still working. I power-cycled the communications gateway, waited about ten minutes, and the connection returned. Since then, I have stopped obsessing over every notification.

One unexpected lesson came from researching DIY solar projects: development boards are useful for experimenting with sensors and energy dashboards, but I would not use them to modify a live battery system. That equipment carries serious voltage, and my warranty matters more than curiosity.

For now, the setup is simple: solar panels charge the battery during the day, and the battery handles our peak usage at night. I am saving money without changing how we live, which is exactly why I would make the same purchase again.
