8 months ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium solar battery beside my garage, paired with a 48v growatt inverter and twelve rooftop panels. Before that, our electricity bill jumped whenever the family cooked dinner, ran the heat pump, and charged my wife's car after sunset.
The biggest difference is what happens between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. The battery charges from surplus solar during the afternoon, then quietly carries the house through those expensive hours. I changed the inverter's schedule so it stops exporting quite so early and keeps more energy stored. That small adjustment made a surprisingly noticeable difference: our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 in summer to $78, even though our usage stayed about the same. In spring and fall, it is usually closer to $45–$60. I do still pay the utility connection charge and buy a little power on several cloudy days, so the battery has not made us completely independent.
I did have one minor scare during the first week. At 6:00 p.m., the battery showed 18% while the inverter reported a warning about low voltage. I had accidentally left the backup reserve at 20% and turned on a space heater. After switching the heater off, I checked the cable lugs and restarted the monitoring app. The system recovered within a few minutes, and Growatt's support confirmed it was normal protection behavior, not a failed battery.
Since then, I keep the reserve at 30% and avoid running large loads together. The app is useful for checking state of charge, daily solar production, and battery discharge, although its graphs occasionally lag behind reality by ten minutes. I also appreciate that the lithium battery is silent; there is no engine-like noise at night.
For my household, the win is simple: stored solar now covers evening essentials reliably.
