Solution Solar Inverter
After three months with my home solar battery system, I have stopped thinking about electricity in the same way.
My biggest surprise has been how much the battery changes my evening routine. I have a 9.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery paired with 6 kW of rooftop solar. During sunny days, the panels usually charge it before lunch, and the house runs from stored energy after sunset.
Before installation, our utility plan charged the highest rates from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. I used to come home, turn on the oven, dishwasher, and heat pump, and watch the meter climb. Now the battery carries most of that load. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 in summer to around $70, even though our usage is about the same.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week. The battery’s state of charge reached 18%, and it stopped discharging to protect itself. I initially thought the inverter had failed. Checking the monitoring app showed the reserve setting was working exactly as intended. I lowered the reserve temporarily to 10%, then raised it again when the forecast improved.
I also keep a marine on board lifepo4 battery charger in the garage for maintaining a small backup battery and trailer gear, although it is separate from the home solar storage setup.
What I appreciate most is the quietness. There is no generator noise, fuel to store, or daily maintenance beyond checking connections and glancing at the battery monitoring app.
I am still grid-connected, and I do not expect the battery to eliminate every bill or carry us through a long outage. Still, it has made peak-hour electricity noticeably cheaper and gives me useful backup power for lights, refrigeration, and internet. For our household, that practical difference has made the solar investment feel worthwhile.
