I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during our utility’s expensive evening hours. Before that, my rooftop solar system exported plenty at midday, then I paid the highest rate after dinner. The battery changed that routine immediately.

My installer mounted the lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage beside the inverter. The setup took one day, although commissioning took longer than expected because the monitoring app initially showed the wrong time zone. Once that was corrected, the solar battery charged from the panels through the afternoon and discharged automatically from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. I did not need to remember anything.

The biggest practical difference is visible on my bill. Our household uses roughly 18 to 24 kWh daily, and the battery now supplies most of our cooking, lighting, television, and heat-pump use during peak pricing. My monthly bill fell from about $190 to $105 in the first full month, then settled around $115 depending on weather. That is not a magical zero bill, but saving roughly $70 each month feels very real.

I also paid attention to the battery management system because reliability mattered more to me than flashy app features. The installer explained the lifepo4 battery management system, including cell balancing, temperature protection, and automatic shutdown limits. During one unusually hot afternoon, the app briefly reported reduced charging power. I checked the garage and found the battery operating normally; ventilation and a cooler evening resolved it without a service call.

I still pull power from the grid on cloudy days, and the battery does not cover every overnight load. Even so, using stored solar instead of selling cheap midday energy and buying expensive evening electricity has made the system worthwhile. After months, I mostly forget it is there.
