Solution Solar Inverter
After two summers of watching my electricity bills jump every evening, I finally added a 10-kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system. The main reason was simple: my panels produced plenty during the day, but we used most of our power after dinner.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage, connected it to the inverter, and set the software to reserve 20 percent for outages. I did have to move a shelf and add a dedicated circuit, so it was not quite plug-and-play. Still, the crew finished in an afternoon, and the monitoring app showed solar charging that same day.
The biggest difference appears during peak hours. Before the battery, my utility pulled expensive grid electricity from about 4 p.m. until bedtime. Now the battery charges from midday solar and carries us through that window. On an average sunny day, I see only a small amount of grid use after sunset. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 in summer to $72 last July, despite running the air conditioner regularly.
I also like having a battery powered generator for home, although I avoid calling it a replacement for a gasoline generator. During a brief outage last month, the transfer happened automatically; refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and the garage door opener stayed on. The battery lasted about eight hours with our normal essentials, but I did not test heavy heating loads.
My only real annoyance came in January. The app showed the battery at 100 percent, yet the inverter stopped discharging at night. I found a tripped breaker after checking the simple troubleshooting guide. Resetting it fixed everything, though I saved the installer’s number anyway.
Overall, it has made my solar investment feel more useful.
