I finally installed a 10kWh home battery beside my inverter last spring, after watching my electricity bills climb despite having solar panels. The pack uses lifepo4 cells 200ah, and I chose it mainly for safety, cycle life, and the ability to use my own solar power after sunset.
Before the battery, my panels exported a lot around noon, while we bought expensive grid electricity between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. With the storage system, I changed the inverter to charge from solar first, then discharge during those peak hours. On sunny weekdays, it now runs my refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes induction cooking without pulling much from the grid.
My utility bill used to average about $185 per month before; now it is usually $110 to $125, depending on weather and weekend usage. The biggest difference is not spectacular on one day, but the steady reduction in peak consumption. In six months, I estimate the battery has saved roughly $360, even after allowing for cloudy days. I keep a simple spreadsheet comparing solar production, battery state of charge, and grid import, which has made the savings surprisingly easy to see.
The hiccup happened during a heatwave. The battery stopped discharging at 20% state of charge, although I expected it to continue. I initially thought the battery was failing, but the monitoring app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally enabled while testing backup mode. After lowering that reserve to 10%, the system worked normally again. It was a small lesson: battery settings matter as much as the hardware, and I now check firmware alerts monthly.
For me, the real value is practical rather than flashy: lower peak charges, quieter evenings, and less dependence on the grid. I am considering adding another battery next year, but I will first track degradation through winter.
