After three summers of watching my rooftop solar panels send cheap afternoon electricity back to the grid, I finally installed a 10 kWh batería lifepo4 storage battery in the garage. The main reason was simple: my household used the most power after sunset, when utility rates were highest.
Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter beside the existing solar equipment, connected the battery backup, and spent most of the afternoon checking cables and programming the energy management app. I chose self-consumption mode, so the battery charges from solar generation during the day and supplies my lights, refrigerator, router, and heat pump at night. That setting has been the biggest money-saver.
Before storage, my average evening bill was roughly $3.20 per night during summer. After installation, it usually falls below $1, depending on cloudy weather. Over the first full month, my electricity bill dropped from $118 to $67. That is not a magical zero-dollar bill, because I still pay grid connection fees and occasionally buy power on rainy days, but the peak-hour savings are obvious. I can see the battery discharge around 5 p.m., exactly when cooking dinner and running the dishwasher would otherwise cost more.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me to pay attention to settings. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at night and stayed at 100%. I initially thought the solar battery had failed, but the app showed “backup reserve” had somehow been changed to 100%. I lowered that reserve to 25%, restarted the inverter, and normal operation returned. Now I keep that reserve for outages and check the monitoring app once a week, rather than obsessing over it.
The system has not made me energy-independent, but it has made my solar power much more useful. Stored sunshine powers tonight.
