After six months of watching my rooftop solar panels send excess power back to the grid, I finally added a 10kWh home battery, and the difference has been most noticeable after sunset. Before the battery, my family would come home around 6 p.m., turn on the oven, television, and air conditioner, then watch our electricity usage climb during expensive peak hours. Now the battery stores daytime solar energy and runs those loads until about 11 p.m. That change sounds small, but my monthly bill has dropped from roughly $180 to $95 on average. It varies with weather, but saving around $80 each month feels real.

The setup was easier than I expected. My installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to my existing solar inverter. I had specifically searched for a makita inverter, but ended up keeping my current inverter because it was compatible with the battery system. The app took about ten minutes to install, and after one evening of checking settings, I stopped thinking about it. I set a reserve level of 20 percent so there would still be backup power during an outage.

The most useful feature is seeing the battery charge during sunny afternoons and discharge during peak pricing. On a clear day, solar production usually fills it by 2 p.m. When clouds roll in, the battery simply charges less; it does not create any mystery faults. I did have one minor troubleshooting moment: the app showed “offline” one morning. The battery was still working, and resetting my router brought the connection back within a few minutes.

Still, using stored solar instead of buying peak-priced electricity has made the investment feel worthwhile. I check the battery level more than I need to, but mostly it just sits doing its job.
