Solution Solar Battery
Keeping my solar battery system running through summer has changed how I think about electricity bills. Last year, I installed a 5kw lithium battery alongside my rooftop solar panels, mainly to avoid buying expensive power during the evening peak.
The setup was fairly painless, although I underestimated how much space the inverter and battery needed. My installer mounted the unit in the garage, near the main switchboard. After commissioning, I spent several evenings watching the monitoring app and learning its routine. During sunny afternoons, solar power runs the house first, then fills the battery. Once the sun goes down, the stored energy covers our lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and television until bedtime.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before installing energy storage, our household regularly pulled from the grid during those hours. Now, I usually run on battery power, and my daily bill has dropped by roughly $2 to $3, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. That sounds modest, but it adds up to around $70 a month in summer.
One hot afternoon, I noticed the battery state of charge stuck at 62%, even though the panels were producing normally. The app showed a communication warning. I switched off the battery isolator, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The warning disappeared, charging resumed, and I have not seen the issue since. I appreciated being able to fix that minor problem without an emergency visit, though I would not open the equipment or touch wiring myself.
For me, the best part is not energy independence. It is predictable evening usage, lower peak tariffs, and visibility into my system. I still buy electricity on cloudy days, and the battery does not eliminate my bill. But for savings, it has been a worthwhile solar investment.
