Every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter climb once the sun went down. Our rooftop solar panels produced plenty during the day, but our family cooked, showered, and ran the dishwasher during expensive evening hours. After installing a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, that pattern changed. Setup was less dramatic than I expected.
The installer mounted it in our garage beside the inverter and ran a quick test of the solar battery system. During commissioning, he showed me the app, where I could see solar generation, battery state of charge, household load, and grid use in real time. He also pointed out the label mentioning “celdas para baterarecargable”, an odd phrase I later laughed about because the cells are clearly rechargeable.
What impressed me most was not the app, though, but how quietly the battery handled peak hours. Each afternoon, it charged from excess solar until it reached 100 percent. At 5:00 p.m., when our utility rate jumped, the inverter switched automatically to battery power. We cooked dinner, ran the air conditioner, and watched television without drawing much from the grid. On sunny days, the battery carried us until around midnight; on cloudy days, it usually covered the most expensive window rather than the whole night.
Before installation, our highest monthly bill was about $210. After two full months, it fell to $128, despite similar usage. That is roughly $82 saved, which feels more meaningful than a flashy dashboard statistic.
One small troubleshooting moment came during a heatwave. The battery stopped charging at 94%, and the app showed a temperature warning. I initially panicked, but the manual explained that charging pauses to protect the cells. I cleared leaves blocking the garage vent, and charging resumed after twenty minutes. Since then, I keep the area clear and check ventilation monthly. For me, the biggest benefit is predictability: I know evening power comes from stored solar energy.
