Keeping our electricity bills under control was the main reason I added a battery to my rooftop solar system. Before that, sunny afternoons often meant exporting cheap power, then buying it back during expensive evening hours. The battery changed that pattern in a way I could see on every bill.
My setup uses a 5kw growatt hybrid inverter with a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery. Installation was less disruptive than I expected. The electrician mounted the inverter beside the existing switchboard, connected the battery in the garage, and had everything running by late afternoon. The app took an evening to understand, but once I learned where to find state-of-charge and daily solar production, it became genuinely useful.
I now set the battery to charge from surplus solar first. Around 4:30 p.m., I switch the house to battery output, so cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and using lights do not pull from the grid. On cloudy days, I keep a reserve for overnight rather than chasing every last kilowatt-hour. That small adjustment has made the system feel much more practical.
The biggest surprise has been the peak-hour saving. My evening usage is usually 6–8 kWh, and the battery now supplies most of it. My monthly bill dropped by roughly 25–35 percent compared with the same months last year, even though our household habits have barely changed.
One minor hiccup happened after a firmware update. The app showed the battery at 100%, but it refused to discharge that evening. I checked the settings, restarted the inverter, and discovered the backup reserve had quietly reset to 100%. Lowering it to 20% fixed the problem immediately. I appreciated that the fix was simple, although I did save a screenshot of the settings afterward. Now I check battery level each morning and enjoy calmer evenings.
