Recently, my evening electricity bills have become less stressful since I added a home battery to my rooftop solar system. I’m using a growatt 6000 tl3 inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery, and the biggest difference is how little power I buy during peak hours.
Before the battery, cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging phones after sunset pushed our usage into the expensive evening tariff. Now the solar panels fill the battery through the day, and the battery takes over around 5 p.m. I set it to reserve 20% for outages, so there is a useful backup without giving up too much savings. Over the last two billing cycles, my evening consumption dropped by 70%. The exact saving changes with weather and our habits, but I’m typically keeping about $35–$50 more per month than before. That feels more meaningful than the app’s impressive-looking daily graphs.
I did have one frustrating moment during the first week. The battery stopped discharging overnight even though the monitoring screen showed plenty of stored energy. After checking the settings, I found the minimum state-of-charge reserve had accidentally been set to 80% during commissioning. I lowered it to 20%, restarted the inverter, and the system behaved normally. It was not a dramatic fault, just a reminder that solar battery settings matter as much as the hardware.
Noise has also been better than expected. The inverter makes a fan sound when the battery is working hard, but I barely notice it in the garage. I’m still watching battery cycles and discharge efficiency, especially in winter, but so far the storage system has made our solar power more useful. Instead of exporting cheap midday electricity and buying it back expensively at night, I’m using more of my own generation, which is exactly why I installed it.
