Solution Solar Battery
Keeping my lights on after sunset without watching the meter spin has been the biggest change since I installed my home solar battery system last spring.
I already had eight rooftop panels, but before adding storage, I sent most of my afternoon solar back to the grid and bought electricity during the evening peak. My installer paired a 10-kWh lithium battery with a 5 kw inverter. The setup took one day, and the electrician clearly explained the monitoring app before leaving.
The savings showed up most clearly on hot weekdays. I run the dishwasher, washing machine, and heat-pump water heater while the panels are producing, then the battery carries the house through dinner and the evening. My utility bill used to average about $210 in summer. This year, the highest month was $126, despite similar weather. I am not claiming the battery eliminated my bill—there are still connection fees and cloudy days—but the difference is noticeable.
One small hiccup taught me more than the sales brochure did. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at 5 p.m., exactly when our peak rate began. The app showed it as “standby,” and restarting the inverter did nothing. I called support, who had me check a backup reserve setting that had somehow been reset to 100%. Once I lowered the reserve to 20%, normal discharge returned that evening.
Now I check the state-of-charge screen occasionally. During outages, the battery keeps my refrigerator, router, and lights running, which is reassuring. It has not made me energy independent, but it has made my investment feel more useful.
