Solution Solar Battery
Our small rooftop solar setup changed most noticeably during summer evenings. Before adding a battery, I sent nearly all my solar power back to the grid at midday and bought electricity after dinner, when rates were highest. I installed a solar battery 12v 200ah unit in a ventilated utility room, mainly to test whether energy storage could make a practical difference without rebuilding the whole system.
After a licensed electrician connected the battery bank to my inverter and charge controller, I set the app to prioritize self-consumption.
On sunny days, the battery usually reached full by mid-afternoon. From about 5:30 p.m. until bedtime, it ran my refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, and television. That shift was more valuable than expected: my peak-hour grid usage fell sharply, and my monthly bill dropped by roughly 30% during the first month. In my area, savings vary with weather, but the battery also gave me backup during two short outages.
A minor troubleshooting moment came after several cloudy days. The state-of-charge reading stayed near 20%, and the inverter stopped charging even when the sun returned. I first blamed the panels, but found the battery temperature sensor connector had loosened. After switching off the system safely, I reseated it and tightened the terminal. A restart restored normal charging. I now check cable connections every few months.
That incident taught me a solar battery is not completely “set and forget.” For daily use, I keep the battery reserve at 25% rather than draining it fully. This leaves emergency capacity and seems gentler on the battery cells. I am considering adding a second solar battery next year, but only if monitoring shows enough surplus solar generation to charge it regularly. For now, this battery storage has made evening electricity use cheaper and home less dependent on grid power.
