I installed my home solar battery last spring because our evening electricity use was expensive. The array already covered much of our daytime demand, but after sunset we bought power when rates peaked. My main focus has been how the battery handles those hours, and it has made a noticeable difference.
The system uses a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate pack (I kept seeing “lifepo4 100” while comparing battery listings), paired with a hybrid inverter and rooftop solar. Installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the inverter in our garage and ran a new line to the main panel. It was less dramatic than expected, although the battery was surprisingly heavy.
On a sunny weekday, solar fills it by mid-afternoon after running the refrigerator, washing machine, and dishwasher. At 4:30, the system switches to battery power, and we stay off-grid through dinner and most of the evening. Before storage, our highest usage landed between 5 and 9 p.m., so this timing suits our utility tariff.
Our monthly bill has fallen roughly $55–$75, depending on weather and heating. That is not a zero bill, but it is real savings I see every month. In July, we used only 18 kWh from the grid during peak hours, compared with 96 kWh the previous summer.
One hiccup came during a cloudy week. The battery stopped charging at 82%, and the monitoring app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the inverter once, then called the installer. They found a loose network cable in the garage. After reseating it, charging resumed that afternoon.
For me, the biggest benefit is predictability. I know the solar battery will carry the expensive evening load even when grid prices jump. It has also changed my habits: I run laundry while the sun is out and save battery capacity for dinner. I occasionally check battery backup levels, but I no longer obsess over the app. The storage system quietly does its job, which is exactly what I wanted.
