I installed a 10 kWh solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but once the sun went down, our heat pump, induction cooker, and dishwasher pushed the meter into the highest tariff period. The solar battery storage system has made a noticeable difference.

During sunny months, the battery usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. Around 4 p.m., it starts discharging automatically, and I use that stored solar power through the evening. I changed the inverter settings so it prioritizes self-consumption rather than exporting everything to the grid. That small adjustment mattered more than I expected. Our monthly bill dropped by roughly 30–40%, although the exact saving depends on weather and how much heating we use.

Before buying, I spent weeks comparing lithium iron phosphate battery manufacturers because I wanted a chemistry known for safety and long cycle life. I also checked the usable battery capacity rather than trusting the headline number. A 10 kWh battery does not necessarily provide 10 kWh every day once reserve settings and efficiency losses are included.

The most useful feature has been the backup function. We had a short outage during a storm, and the battery kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a few outlets running without interruption. I did not try to run the oven or whole-house heating, but having the essentials working was reassuring.

I did have one minor issue at first: the battery stopped charging at about 85% for two days. The monitoring app showed no clear fault, so I contacted the installer. They found that a battery reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. After correcting it, charging returned to normal.

It has not eliminated my electricity bill, but solar battery storage has made our energy use more predictable and reduced our dependence on peak-rate power. For me, that practical saving matters more than chasing complete energy independence.
