Yesterday I finally stopped checking the grid meter every few minutes. My home has a 6kW rooftop solar array, and I added a 13.8kWh byd lvs battery because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, beside the inverter, and spent most of the morning configuring the energy management settings. I specifically asked for self-consumption mode: charge from solar during the day, then run the house from stored energy after sunset. That simple schedule has made the biggest difference to my bill.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. We cook, run the dishwasher, and use the heat-pump water heater after 5 p.m. without pulling much from the grid. Before storage, those hours were when our household consumed the most electricity. My power bills have fallen from roughly $220 a month in summer to around $95, although weather and utility rates obviously change. I do not treat that as a guaranteed saving, but seeing the battery cover our evening peak period is genuinely satisfying.
The most useful moment came during a three-day stretch of rain. On the first night, the battery emptied earlier than expected, and I initially thought something was wrong. The monitoring app showed a low solar forecast, though, so the system was behaving normally. I changed nothing; I simply reduced unnecessary loads and let the grid cover the remainder.
That small scare taught me not to obsess over battery percentage. Storage is there to smooth out solar production, not to make my home magically off-grid in every season.
I now check the app once, mostly to see whether tomorrow’s weather calls for a different charging plan. For me, that predictability matters more than impressive specifications.
