5:30 each morning, I check my solar battery app before making coffee.
Before the battery, my rooftop solar panels sent surplus power straight back to the grid. In summer, that felt wasteful because evenings are when our household uses most electricity: ovens, dishwasher, air conditioner, and laundry. I added a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery with a 3500 watt inverter, mainly to shift daytime generation into those expensive hours.
The installation itself was easier than expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage, ran a short conduit to the inverter, and finished testing before lunch. I only had to connect the monitoring app and choose “self-consumption” mode.
On the first full day, the battery charged by 2:00 p.m. By dinner time, it was supplying nearly everything in the house. Our utility rate jumps from about 14 cents to 31 cents per kilowatt-hour between 4 and 9 p.m. Seeing the app show battery power instead of grid power during that window was surprisingly satisfying.
My first complete month showed roughly 260 kilowatt-hours shifted from peak periods. The bill fell by about 68 dollars compared with the previous year, even though our usage was similar. It is not a magic zero bill, but the reduction feels tangible.
The only hiccup happened during a brief outage. The battery kept lights on, but the inverter beeped and stopped powering our refrigerator after about five minutes. I found the backup circuit had been set too conservatively in the app. After increasing the limit and restarting the inverter, it worked normally. That small scare taught me to test backup power occasionally rather than assuming it was perfect.
Overall, the battery has made solar power feel useful after sunset, not merely impressive on sunny afternoons. I like less grid dependence each evening, especially during our expensive hours.
