32700 cells

2am, I woke up to check the inverter after our first full night using a home solar battery. The weather app predicted rain, yet the battery had charged to 92% from our roof panels before sunset. I was curious, not worried, because this was the first time I had trusted the system to carry the house through peak hours.

Our installer built the pack with 32700 cells, which I had only seen mentioned in battery forums. The setup includes a hybrid inverter, a battery management system (BMS), and 10.2kWh of usable storage. On ordinary evenings, I set the battery to charge from solar only and reserve 20% for outages. That simple setting has made the biggest difference to my electricity bill.

Before storage, my utility pulled expensive power between 4pm and 9pm. Last month, our peak usage dropped from roughly 280 kWh to 74, and the bill fell by about $61. It is not a dramatic fortune, but it covers the battery payment better than I expected. More importantly, I no longer avoid cooking dinner or running the dishwasher during those hours. The battery quietly supplies them, while the solar panels refill it next day.

The only hiccup came during a cloudy weekend. The inverter showed a “low-battery” warning even though the app displayed 31%. That was enough to make me switch on the grid backup manually. I messaged the installer, who found the reserve setting had been changed to 25% after a firmware update. We restored it, and the warning has not returned.

Now I check the state-of-charge before bed, but I do not obsess over it. Watching the battery handle evening loads automatically is the most satisfying part. For me, solar storage is less about having a high-tech gadget and more about making our daily routine cheaper and calmer.
