Running my home battery for eight months has changed the way I think about electricity bills. The biggest difference is what happens between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility’s peak rates used to make evenings surprisingly expensive.

I have a 9.6-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery paired with 5 kW of rooftop panels. On a sunny day, the panels cover daytime loads first and send the extra power into storage. After sunset, the battery carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater.

My first full bill after installation was the moment it felt worthwhile: $74, compared with $163 the same month the previous year. It is not a guaranteed saving every month, because cloudy weather and winter heating still pull energy from the grid, but peak-hour usage has nearly disappeared. I usually set the battery to reserve 20 percent for outages, so I am not squeezing out the absolute maximum savings.

The most reassuring part is how quietly it works. I check the monitoring app over breakfast, not constantly. It shows solar production, battery state of charge, and grid consumption in plain graphs. Once, during a storm, the power flickered twice. The transfer was fast enough that our router never rebooted, although I noticed the battery had dropped to 38 percent by morning. I later adjusted the reserve setting to 30 percent, a small change that gives me more comfort without noticeably hurting monthly savings.

Installation was clean, but the electrician needed extra time to explain the inverter’s shutdown procedure. I wrote it beside the panel rather than trusting my memory.
