Solution Solar Battery
8 months ago, I installed a home solar battery after watching our evening electricity use eat through the savings from our rooftop panels. My setup is fairly ordinary: 6 kW of solar, a hybrid inverter, and a 280ah lifepo4 grade a battery bank in the garage. I chose LiFePO4 mainly for its safety reputation and cycle life, not because I wanted a complicated DIY project.
The biggest difference has been peak-hour bill savings. Before the battery, our system exported plenty of power around lunchtime, then bought expensive electricity between 5 and 9 p.m. Now the battery charges from solar during the day and carries most of our evening load. We run the refrigerator, lights, television, Wi-Fi, and sometimes the washing machine from stored energy. On a typical summer day, that has reduced grid consumption by roughly 8 to 12 kWh. Our monthly bill dropped from about $180 to between $70 and $95, depending on the weather and air-conditioning use.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 35% even though the app showed plenty of capacity remaining. I initially thought the solar battery was faulty, but the installer explained that the reserve setting was protecting backup power for an outage. I lowered the reserve to 20%, and the system immediately used more of the available storage. That simple setting change made a noticeable difference.
After several months, the battery still reaches full charge on sunny days and usually gets us through the evening. Cloudy weather is less impressive, but the solar panels and battery management system adjust without any input from me. I especially appreciate the quiet operation and the fact that I no longer watch peak-rate prices with anxiety. The biggest practical lesson has been sizing the battery around actual evening usage, rather than buying the largest capacity available.
