I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and cooking pushed the evening bill higher than I expected. The battery changed that routine immediately. It charges from surplus solar around midday, then supplies the house from about 4 p.m. until bedtime.
The most noticeable saving is during peak hours. Before storage, I was paying roughly 32 cents per kWh between 4 and 9 p.m. Now the battery discharges during that window, while the grid covers only occasional spikes. My first full month dropped from $186 to $119, even though our usage was almost identical. That $67 difference felt more meaningful than the sales spreadsheet because I could see exactly when the battery was working in the monitoring app. On sunny days it reaches full charge by mid-afternoon; on cloudy days, it simply contributes what it has and leaves the grid to fill the gap.
I did have one small learning moment. During the first week, the battery stopped discharging at night, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially blamed the inverter, then noticed I had accidentally enabled a backup-reserve setting at 80 percent. That meant the system was protecting most of the capacity for an outage instead of using it for daily savings. I lowered the reserve to 25 percent, and normal operation returned that evening. I also bought a compact “lithium battery charger with led” for emergency top-ups and testing, although I have only used it once. The charger’s indicator made it easy to confirm the battery was actually receiving power, but I still followed the manufacturer’s instructions and never left it unattended.
For me, storage makes solar power far more useful.
