I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. My setup is simple: rooftop solar feeds the inverter during daylight, and the battery stores whatever we do not use. I chose a lifepo4 rack battery rather than another wall-mounted unit because the modular design seemed easier to expand later.
Installation was easier than expected. My electrician connected the rack to a hybrid inverter in one afternoon, leaving clearance for ventilation. It makes almost no noise, except a faint click when charging begins.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, I tried to run the dishwasher, cook, and do laundry before sunset. Now the solar battery handles those loads after dark, so the house uses far less grid power during peak hours. My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $210 to $125 on average. It is not a perfect saving every month; cloudy weather and heating use still push costs up. However, the difference is obvious on the utility statement, and I appreciate using my own solar energy instead of buying expensive evening electricity.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its normal time. The app showed “standby,” even though the state of charge was 78 percent. I power-cycled the inverter once and checked the operating schedule; apparently the update had reset the time-of-use window. Restoring that setting fixed everything within ten minutes.
Since then, it has been boring in the best possible way. I check the state of charge occasionally, but otherwise the lithium battery quietly does its job. For me, the real value is not energy independence; it is predictable peak-hour savings and a little less dependence on changing utility prices.
