8 months ago, I installed a 10 kWh home solar battery after getting tired of watching my electric bill jump whenever the sun went down. The setup was less dramatic than I expected, but it still took most of a Saturday. The installer spent extra time explaining the battery management system, which I appreciated because I wanted to understand what I was paying for. For clarity, this is not a homemade pack of 18650 charger lithium battery cells; it is a professionally assembled lithium iron phosphate battery system.

The biggest difference showed up during peak hours. My utility charges more from 4 to 9 p.m., so the inverter now switches the house to stored solar energy after dinner. Before installation, I regularly used 7 or 8 kWh from the grid in that window, especially with the oven, heat pump, and two laptops running. Last month, that dropped to just under 2 kWh. My bill fell by about $38, which is not life-changing, but it is predictable savings every month.

I also like seeing the battery state of charge in the phone app. On sunny days, it reaches 100% by early afternoon, then carries us through most of the evening. Cloudy winter days are different: the battery may stop around 55%, and I still buy some peak-rate electricity.

One small troubleshooting moment happened during the first week. The app showed a “battery unavailable” warning after a brief outage. I checked the breaker, restarted the communications gateway, and waited about five minutes. It reconnected without losing charge. Since then, I have only cleaned the vents and checked the dashboard monthly.

For me, the storage battery has been worthwhile mainly because it turns my daytime solar surplus into useful evening power, rather than sending everything back to the grid for a small credit.
