8 months ago, I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with my rooftop solar system. It was not a dramatic renovation: the installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and programmed it to charge from surplus solar during the day and power the house after sunset.
The biggest difference showed up on my evening bill. Before storage, I routinely bought electricity between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility rate is highest. Now the battery usually carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the heat-pump water heater through that window. My monthly bill fell from roughly $165 to $72 in the first month, and it has generally stayed between $70 and $90 depending on cloudy weather and how much air conditioning we use. It is not total energy independence, but seeing the meter barely move during dinner is satisfying.
One small troubleshooting moment made me appreciate the system more. After a firmware update, the battery stopped charging one afternoon. The monitoring app showed “standby,” although the panels were producing. I checked the breaker, called support, and learned the inverter needed a restart rather than the battery itself. After shutting down the system for five minutes and restarting it in the recommended order, the charge cycle returned. I also keep a 48 volt lithium battery charger in the utility closet for emergency top-ups, although I have only used it once to test the connection.
What I like most is the quiet routine. The solar battery charges while I work, then discharges automatically; I do not babysit it or change settings. On sunny weeks, solar self-consumption is high enough that our grid use is minimal. On rainy stretches, the battery still gives us a buffer, especially at night. Personally, the combination of lower peak-hour costs and automatic battery backup has made my home energy use feel much less stressful.
