Vacuuming the garage floor was the least glamorous part of installing my solar battery, but it turned out to be worth it. I had eve batteries fitted beside my inverter last summer, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our rooftop solar panels.

The setup itself was straightforward, although the electrician spent more time than expected balancing the battery settings with our existing inverter. I was told the system would prioritize solar charging during the day and release stored energy after 4pm, when rates jumped. That schedule has made the biggest difference to our bills.

Before storage, I routinely switched on the dishwasher and washing machine after dinner because that was convenient. Now I try to run both while the panels are producing, then let the home battery cover lights, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, and heating in the evening. On sunny days, the battery is usually full by mid-afternoon. I have seen our peak-hour consumption drop dramatically, and our monthly bill is commonly 35–45% lower than the same months last year, despite using more electricity in winter.

The most useful surprise was how quiet the change feels. There is no generator-like noise, just a small app notification when the battery starts discharging. Once, however, I noticed it stopped at 62% charge. The monitoring app showed a warning about grid voltage. I initially assumed the battery had failed, but the installer explained that it was a temporary protection setting, not a hardware fault. After a remote reset, the battery resumed normal operation. I appreciated that the system protected itself rather than forcing a discharge during unstable power.

After several months, I watch household habits, not battery percentage. Monitoring solar production and peak tariffs tells me more than checking whether storage is full. It has made evening imports cheaper.
