Solution Solar Battery
5:30 p.m. is when our electricity rate jumps, and that's now my favorite time to check the battery app. Before installing a 15kwh lithium battery, I used to watch the dishwasher, oven, and air conditioner push our evening bill upward. Now the solar battery has already charged through the afternoon, so it quietly takes over when the sun disappears. I still notice the system, but mostly because the house feels less expensive to run.
On a typical summer day, my panels fill the battery to roughly 90% by late afternoon. We use about 8 to 10 kWh after dinner, and the battery supplies most of that instead of importing expensive grid power. My utility bill dropped by about $65 in the first full month, then by $48 during a cloudier month. Those are not dramatic numbers, but they are real savings in my house, and they make the solar storage worthwhile. I also like seeing our evening consumption come from stored solar energy rather than buying power at the worst rate.
One small hiccup came during a week of rainy weather. The battery state of charge fell lower than I expected, and the inverter briefly stopped discharging overnight. I found a warning about reserve mode in the monitoring app. I had accidentally raised the backup reserve while experimenting with settings, leaving too little capacity available for normal use. After lowering it and restarting the inverter, everything worked normally. I was relieved that it was a setting, not a failed battery cell. Since then, I keep a 20% reserve for outages and let the system use the remaining capacity for peak-hour savings.
That balance suits us: the battery backup is there when needed, while everyday solar self-consumption keeps bills predictable. It has become quiet, practical household equipment instead of another gadget.
