5 months ago I added a lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before that, my panels covered daytime use, but the house still pulled power from the grid after dinner. The battery has changed that routine more than I expected.
On sunny days, solar panels usually fill the 10kWh battery by mid-afternoon. I set it to discharge during our utility's peak window, from 4pm to 9pm. That simple schedule has been the biggest money saver. My monthly bill used to hover around $180 in summer; now it is usually closer to $95, although weather and rates vary. This isn't a miracle—just fewer grid kilowatt-hours at the worst price. We also run the dishwasher and laundry before sunset whenever possible, so the stored energy lasts through bedtime.
One small hiccup came in January. The battery stopped discharging overnight, and the app showed a communication warning. I initially assumed the inverter had failed, but the physical battery lights were normal. After checking cables and restarting the gateway, I found our Wi-Fi router had updated and changed its settings. Reconnecting the gateway took about ten minutes, and the discharge schedule resumed that evening. It was a useful reminder that a home energy storage system still depends on ordinary internet equipment, even though the battery itself was fine.
I also keep a small 150 watt inverter for emergency charging and testing small devices, but it is not connected to the main battery circuit. For outages, my battery backup can power the refrigerator, modem, and a few lights through a transfer switch. I don't try to run the oven or clothes dryer; that would drain the storage quickly.
After six months, I'm most impressed by the quiet, automatic peak-hour savings rather than the backup feature. I rarely think about the battery now, which is probably the best compliment. Before buying the battery, I worried about maintenance and complicated software. So far, the only routine task has been clearing leaves near the inverter and checking the battery temperature in the app. I have not noticed meaningful capacity loss, and the installer has been responsive when I had questions. For me, the practical win is simple: fewer peak-rate purchases without changing how our family lives here.
