Recently I added a home battery system around my existing rooftop solar array, and the difference showed up most clearly during peak-rate evenings. Before the battery, my panels exported excess power in the afternoon, then I bought electricity back after dinner when rates were highest. The heart of the setup is a growatt min 5000 inverter paired with a 10-kWh lithium battery. I chose this combination because I wanted usable storage, not just impressive panel capacity. The battery usually reaches full by mid-afternoon, and the inverter automatically switches to battery power when my time-of-use rate begins. That automatic changeover has been the biggest practical win; I do not have to monitor an app or manually flip anything.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in the first month. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at night, even though it showed 62% charge. I checked the inverter settings, restarted the system, and found that the update had reset the operating mode from self-consumption to backup-only. Switching it back took less than five minutes, and normal operation returned that evening. Growatt support also confirmed the setting through email, which made me more comfortable relying on the solar battery every day.
Since then, I have kept a simple note of daily solar production, battery state of charge, and grid imports. It helps me adjust laundry and dishwashing to sunny hours.
