I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery powerwall last spring, mostly to stop buying so much electricity from the grid during our expensive evening hours. Our solar panels already covered daytime use, but dinner, laundry, and showers pushed our consumption right into the utility’s peak rate.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The crew mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to our existing inverter in one day. I did have to update the monitoring app afterward; initially, it showed a strange “standby” message even while the sun was shining. A quick call to the installer revealed the battery was waiting for its first full charge, not failing. Once it reached 100%, the status cleared itself.
The biggest difference appears after 4 p.m. My panels stop producing much by then, but the home battery now carries us through cooking, lights, the dishwasher, and sometimes air-conditioning. Before storage, our evening usage regularly pushed the highest tier on the bill. Since adding the solar battery, the utility statement has dropped by roughly $85 to $110 per month, depending on weather. That is not a dramatic promise from a brochure; it is what I see in my account history.
I did notice that the battery does not magically run everything: our electric range and central heat pump draw too much during a long outage, so I manually switched off nonessential circuits in the app. That small bit of energy management made the stored power last longer.
After six months, I am happiest with the predictable peak-hour savings. The battery is not exciting to look at, but seeing solar energy cover our evening routine instead of feeding it back to the grid feels useful. For me, that practical shift, plus dependable backup power, has made the storage investment feel worthwhile.
