2 summers ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. Before the battery, my panels exported most of their midday production for a modest credit, then I paid the full peak rate after dinner. That felt backwards.

The installation itself was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon. At around 4 p.m., it switches to battery power automatically. I did not need to touch anything during normal operation, although the monitoring app took a few days to understand.

The biggest practical change is our evening usage. We run the dishwasher, lights, television, and sometimes the heat pump from stored solar energy. On sunny days, the battery usually carries us until bedtime and still has 25–35 percent remaining. My electricity bill dropped from roughly $180 a month to between $85 and $110, depending on weather and heating use. The battery does not eliminate the bill, but avoiding those peak-hour rates has made the difference noticeable.

I did have one small wiring confusion while adding a 12v to 24v converter for a separate shed project. I initially assumed it could connect directly into the main solar battery circuit, but the voltage and protection requirements were different. I stopped and had an electrician check the setup. The converter now serves a small 24V ventilation fan independently, with its own fuse, rather than being improvised into the home energy storage system.

After two years, battery capacity appears close to normal, and the system has been quiet. During one short outage, it kept the refrigerator, internet router, and a few lights running, which was more useful than I expected. For me, the solar battery’s best feature is not energy independence; it is making the solar power I already generate useful after sunset.
