Running my home on solar power has changed most noticeably during the evening peak period. I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery beside my existing panels, paired with a growatt 12kw inverter compatible battery and hybrid inverter setup. My main goal was simple: use less grid electricity after sunset without changing how our family lives.
The installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, checked the backup circuits, and configured the battery management system to charge from excess solar generation first. That last setting mattered more than I expected. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge around lunchtime, then powers our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television through dinner. We still draw a little from the grid, but our evening consumption has dropped sharply.
Before storage, our utility bill averaged about $180 monthly. After two full billing cycles, it was $112. The difference is not dramatic every month, because cloudy weather still forces grid charging, but avoiding the expensive 4–9 p.m. rates is where I notice the real value. I also changed the battery reserve from 20% to 30% after one storm caused a brief outage. Keeping that extra capacity means fewer worries when the forecast looks rough.
My only troubleshooting moment came during the first week. The monitoring app showed the battery idle even though the panels were producing. I checked the settings and discovered the charge schedule was still set to off-peak grid charging only. Switching it to solar-priority fixed the problem immediately. Since then, I glance at the state-of-charge screen most mornings, but otherwise the system quietly does its job.
I’m considering another battery module next year, mainly because summer solar surplus goes unused. For me, that is the best sign: storage already feels normal inside our home every day.
