0nce I installed a 200 amp hour lithium battery beside my inverter, the biggest change was how little I thought about electricity during the day. Before adding solar battery storage, I sent most of my rooftop solar power back to the grid at lunchtime, then bought electricity during the evening peak. Now the battery charges from excess solar generation through the afternoon and discharges when the time-of-use rate jumps.
On an average weekday, I see roughly 8 to 10 kWh come out of the battery after sunset. That usually covers our lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, television, and a few hours of cooking. We still pull a little power from the grid, but our evening usage has dropped dramatically. My monthly bill is generally $45 to $70 lower than it was before the installation, depending on weather and how much we run the heat pump. The savings are not exciting in a single day, but they are very noticeable over several billing cycles.
The one hiccup happened during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected, and the app showed a warning about low state of charge. I initially thought the lithium battery had failed, but the issue was simply that I had set the backup reserve to 40 percent. With several rainy days and unusually high evening usage, the system was protecting that reserve and refusing to discharge further. I lowered the reserve to 25 percent, and normal operation returned.
I appreciate having that reserve during outages, too. When the power briefly went down, the lights flickered once and the inverter took over without shutting off the refrigerator. I do not treat the battery as unlimited backup power, but it makes short interruptions much less stressful.
For me, the practical win is using more of my own solar energy instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back at peak rates. The system has been quiet, predictable, and easy to monitor from my phone.
