Solution Solar Inverter
2,400 watts of solar feeds my home, but the real difference started when I added a 12v lithium ion cell battery last spring.
Before the battery, I sent midday power back to the grid and then bought expensive electricity after dinner. Now my solar battery charges between late morning and mid-afternoon, and the inverter holds that energy for the 4–9 p.m. peak window.
My evening use is about 4.5 kWh, so I usually have enough stored power to run the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and my heat-pump water heater. That has been the biggest win: my utility bill fell from about $145 per month to roughly $85, although weather and rates vary. On sunny days, I sometimes finish the night with 20–30% remaining, which gives me confidence during short outages.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, beside the inverter, and connected it to a dedicated backup panel. I had to clear some shelf space and add a disconnect, but the wiring was finished in one afternoon.
After watching the monitoring app for a week, I changed the reserve setting from 10% to 25%. That small adjustment matters because I live in an area with occasional winter outages, and I would rather sacrifice a little bill savings than wake up to a dead battery.
My only real troubleshooting moment came during a cloudy weekend. The battery stopped charging at 62%, and the app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway, checked the Ethernet cable, and waited. Nothing changed until I noticed the router had rebooted after a brief outage. Once it came back online, the battery resumed normally, reaching full charge before sunset.
That experience reminded me that a solar battery is not hands-off, but the system has been quiet and predictable.
