I installed a 10kWh battery labeled “lifepo4 280ah grade b” beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying electricity during our utility’s expensive evening window. Before that, my solar panels exported most of midday production, while we ran the dishwasher, cooked dinner, and charged phones after work. The battery changed that routine immediately.
I set it to charge from solar until late afternoon, then discharge from 5pm to 10pm. On sunny days, it carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television without pulling from the grid. My evening consumption used to be around 6kWh, so the battery now covers nearly all of it. My daily bill dropped by roughly $2.50 to $3.50, depending on rates and weather. That is about $80 to $100 per month in summer, which feels much more meaningful than the app’s flashy lifetime totals.
The most useful feature has been the battery reserve setting. I keep 20% available for outages, rather than squeezing out every last watt each night. We had one short outage during a storm, and the transfer was quick enough that my router stayed online. I only noticed the lights blink and the inverter beep once. That practical backup mattered more to me than the extra savings that day.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, but it was not discharging at sunset. I power-cycled the communications cable, checked the time of use schedule, and found that the update had reset my operating mode to backup only. Restoring self-consumption fixed it immediately. Since then, I check the state of charge in the app every few days, but I rarely touch the system.
I considered adding another battery, but for my household, storage capacity is enough.
