Nearly a year ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity in the evening. My installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, connected it to the existing solar panels, and set the energy storage system to charge from solar during the day and discharge after 4 p.m.
The difference showed up on my first full bill. Before the battery, my family used about 12 kWh from the grid between dinner and bedtime, when our utility’s peak rate was highest. Now the battery usually covers the oven, lights, television, and air conditioner until around 10 p.m. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $65, although the exact savings depend on cloudy weather and how heavily we use the air conditioning. I still import electricity overnight, but much less during the costly peak window.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a heatwave. The battery stopped discharging, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I eventually found that the system had entered a temperature-protection mode because the garage was unusually hot. After improving ventilation and lowering the discharge setting slightly, it resumed normal operation. That experience made me appreciate the battery management system rather than blame the solar battery immediately.
I also spent time understanding the equipment labels. The installer mentioned the inverter dc to dc stage while explaining how solar power is converted and routed into battery charging. I do not pretend to understand every technical detail, but watching the app’s solar generation, battery state of charge, and household consumption has made energy use much more tangible.
For me, the best feature is not energy independence. It is quietly using my own solar power after sunset instead of selling it cheaply during the day and buying it back at a high rate. The battery has required almost no daily attention, and that practical reduction in peak-hour grid use has made the investment feel worthwhile.
