I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but the panels were producing power when nobody was home. By dinner, the house was pulling energy at the worst utility rate.
The first week was surprisingly uneventful. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set the app to prioritize solar charging. I left the reserve at 20 percent, so there would still be backup power during an outage. On sunny days, the battery usually reached 100 percent before 2 p.m. and carried the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, lights, and internet through the evening.
That change showed up quickly on my bill. My utility's peak period runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Before storage, those five hours cost me roughly $3 to $4 per day in winter. Now the battery supplies almost everything during that window. My monthly bill fell from around $165 to $92, even though our usage stayed about the same. It is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, but the savings feel real, especially during cloudy weeks when every stored kilowatt-hour matters.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening, and the monitoring app displayed “standby.” I initially blamed the inverter, even wondering whether my portable milwaukee m18 inverter had confused the system.
