After installing my home battery last spring, I finally stopped watching the utility meter climb every evening.
Our solar setup is ordinary: 8kW of panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 13.5kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery mounted in the garage. I chose a modular solar energy storage system because I wanted something I could expand later, not a giant all-in-one box.
The biggest difference is peak-hour usage. Before, our electric rate jumped from 18¢ to 34¢ per kWh between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. Now, the battery charges from midday solar and carries the house through that expensive window. By bedtime, it is usually around 25–35% full, depending on whether we ran the heat pump or cooked a long dinner.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $210 to $115 over the summer, even though our total electricity use barely changed. That is about $95 saved per month, and the psychological relief matters too. I no longer feel punished for using the dishwasher after work.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery unexpectedly stopped discharging at 8:30pm. I found the backup reserve had been set to 40% after a firmware update. Lowering it back to 20% fixed everything, although I now check the inverter app after updates.
For the installation, I used a fire-rated cabinet that looks like a rack server case with atx, honestly more industrial than pretty. It keeps cables tidy and makes expansion straightforward. I may add another battery module next year, but I am waiting to see how winter solar production affects the numbers.
So far, the storage battery has not made us energy independent, and the backup output will not run every appliance at once. Still, it covers our essential loads during outages and cuts the most expensive grid electricity.
