2 years ago, I installed a 5kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my rooftop solar inverter mainly to avoid expensive evening electricity. My family uses about 18 kWh daily, and cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning create most demand after sunset. Solar fills the battery in the afternoon, and stored energy carries us through dinner and bedtime without much grid power.
The biggest win is peak-hour bill savings. Before storage, our utility's 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. rate made normal evenings surprisingly expensive. During the first full month, our bill dropped from about $186 to $112, although household usage was nearly unchanged. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent by 3 p.m.; on cloudy days, it usually reaches 60 or 70 percent. I configured the inverter to hold a 20 percent reserve for outages, so I still have backup power when the forecast is poor. That setting sacrifices a little daily savings, but the trade-off feels worthwhile.
My only hiccup came during the first week. The monitoring app showed 100 percent, but the house was still importing a small amount of grid power. I suspected faulty wiring until I found that "grid assist" mode was enabled in the inverter. It was topping up tiny loads instead of switching cleanly to battery power. Disabling it fixed the issue within minutes. I also learned that the app display can lag several seconds, so I no longer panic at every strange number.

That small battery runs my router and lights during short outages; the main solar battery handles the refrigerator.
