.After six months of watching my solar panels send cheap afternoon energy back to the grid, I finally installed a 48V LiFePO4 battery bank in the garage. I built it around 16 of the "3.2 v 200ah lifepo4 cells" with a BMS and a hybrid inverter.

The biggest difference is what happens between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery I was buying grid power during those hours, when our utility rate jumps to 31 cents per kilowatt-hour. Now the inverter quietly switches to battery power after sunset. On a typical weekday, we use about 8 kWh overnight for the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, lights, and a few loads. That has cut my monthly bill by roughly $70, although the exact saving changes with weather and how much laundry we do.

The most satisfying part is checking the energy monitor in the morning and seeing the battery at around 35 percent, rather than waking up to a large peak-hour charge. My solar panels usually recharge it by early afternoon, and the charge controller limits the rate when the cells are nearly full.

I did have one small scare during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at about 52 percent even though the house was using power. The BMS app showed a low-temperature protection warning because the garage had dropped below freezing overnight. I moved the temperature sensor closer to the insulated battery box and added a small heater with a thermostat. Since then, charging and discharging have been steady, with no alarm messages.

But using my own solar power at night feels far better than selling it cheaply at noon. For my home, the battery has been most valuable as a peak-hour savings tool, not a complicated gadget.
