growatt new energy

Running my washing machine and dishwasher after sunset has become normal since I installed my home solar battery storage system last spring. Before that, my solar panels sent excess electricity back to the grid during the day, and I bought it back during the expensive evening peak. That felt like wasting the whole point of generating power.

I chose a 10kWh battery after comparing several home energy storage options, including systems connected with growatt new energy equipment. The installation took most of a day. My installer added a hybrid inverter, mounted the battery in the garage, and set the backup reserve at 20% so it would not drain completely. The app was useful immediately, although I spent an evening learning that “self-consumption” mode was better for my routine than backup-only mode.

The biggest difference shows up on my bill. I used to average around $180 in summer, with air conditioning pushing evening usage higher. After changing the battery schedule to discharge from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., my bills have usually landed between $95 and $115. My solar production has not changed; I am simply using more of my own electricity and avoiding peak rates. That saving is more noticeable than the app’s daily graphs.

I did have one minor scare. One morning the battery showed “standby” while the panels were producing. I checked the cables, restarted the inverter, and discovered a software update had paused automatic charging. After installing it, the battery resumed normally. Since then, I check the state of charge every few days, but I no longer hover over it.

During two short outages, the battery switched over quickly enough to keep my refrigerator, router, and a few lights running. It is not a whole-house generator, and I avoid running the oven or clothes dryer from backup power. That limitation is fine for me. My main advice is to size the solar battery around your evening habits, not just your panel capacity.
