Running our home battery storage system for eight months has changed the way I think about electricity bills. My main goal was not energy independence; I wanted to stop buying expensive power during the evening peak. We have a 9.6-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with 5.4-kW of rooftop solar.
Setup was easier than expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, and connected it to a hybrid inverter and the existing solar array. I spent an afternoon in the app setting a 20% reserve, so we would still have backup power during outages. The only confusing part was choosing the charging schedule. After one week, I changed it to charge from solar first and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m.
That schedule made the biggest practical difference. Before storage, my household regularly used 6–8 kWh during those hours, when electricity cost nearly twice as much. Now the battery usually covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and heat-pump load through dinner. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 in summer to $95, despite similar weather. On cloudy weeks, it is closer to $115, but that still feels worthwhile.
I did have one minor scare. The battery stopped discharging one evening and the app showed “standby.” I checked the breaker, but everything looked normal. A support technician explained that the inverter had entered a temperature-protection mode after a very hot garage afternoon. The fan cleared it within an hour, and I later added a small ventilation fan nearby. Since then, it has been uneventful.
I also keep a separate little device labeled “x ray lithium battery charger” for a camping battery, not the home system. It is useful, but I would not confuse it with a proper solar battery inverter or battery management system. For me, storage is.
